I absolutely love butter - and all saturated fats in general… Are you surprised? Let me explain…
Healthy fats are required for stable energy, optimal brain function, hormone balance and satiety. My goal is to debunk the currently so popular misconception that saturated fats are all evil and teach you to incorporate them in your diet for optimal health. Consuming the right types of fatty acids are pivotal part of a healthy diet, in fact I consider the overconsumption of the highly processed vegetable oils (canola oil, rapeseed oil, corn oil, etc) are amongst the top 3 offenders of good health, alongside highly processed foods and sugar. Fatty acids are the building blocks of the cell membranes in every single cell in our body, as well as precursors to our hormones. By providing the right types of building blocks, we can support optimal metabolic processes and even modulate inflammation to our advantage. Besides this, consuming fats will help to stabilize your energy, as they provide long standing satiety and incorporating the right types and right amount of fats will also help with regulating your blood sugar levels. Oysters are considered a superfood - are you surprised? Let me explain!

When I think of something as a superfood I base that on nutrient density per volume or calorie content. When you assess foods from this point of view - very few things actually make the cut…

Start with the basics - 12 oysters provide around 96 calories, made up of 9 grams of protein, 9.4 grams carbohydrates and 2.6 grams of fat. Amazing macronutrient profile isn’t it?

And what about the micronutrients? It is rich in vitamins C, B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B9, B12, D, E and K. It contains 454% of the RDA for zinc (!) making it the most zinc rich food! In addition it is rich in calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, manganese, iodine and selenium.

There is very few other foods that will provide this nutrient profile while consuming less than 100 calories - imagine that is a medium sized apple or half a slice of pizza!

Did I convince you to eat more oysters? I personally always order them when I see them on the menu in a restaurant, and advise you start doing the same! # healthcoach

Working as a nutritionist, I believe in bio individuality - no one size fits all. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) releases a list of fruits and vegetables every spring since 2004, called the "Dirty Dozen". According to their experts, these are the produce that contain concerning amounts of pesticides when grown conventionally. As you can see, strawberries are on the top of the list, with popular leafy greens also in the top three! It is essential to buy these items organic! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

It is so easy to get confused nowadays on the meaning of "healthy" when it comes to food. Reaching for sugar free yogurt or gluten free cookies doesn't mean you are picking a healthy option. That is the food industry's way to trick you into thinking you are making the right choice.

You can however never go wrong by choosing whole foods and cooking from scratch at home. The more you cook the better you will get at it, just don' t give up! Your future self will thank you!
